Mifgash Musicale 2011 - Creating Enriching and Spiritually Moving High Holy Day Worship
Learn to assess the music of your High Holy Days and be strategically creative about planning for enriching and spiritually moving High Holy Day Worship.
The 11th Annual Summer Institute for Synagogue Musicians, Mifgash Musicale will take place July 24-28, 2011 on the HUC-JIR campus in Cincinnati, OH. This year's in-depth study – covering topics such as liturgy, repertoire, nusach, and so much more – will focus on creating enriching and spiritually moving High Holy Day Worship. Registration information and associated forms may be found here.
- What should I know about the special nusach for the Yamim Noraim / High Holy Days?
- How are the music and liturgy for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur different from those for the rest of the year?
- How and when do I teach new melodies to my congregation? To the adult choir? To the children's choir?
- Where can I find music for solo voice, congregational singing or choir?
These are but a few of the questions one can expect to explore at Mifgash Musicale. This year's faculty are Cantor Rachelle Nelson, Cantor Bruce Ruben, Aryell Cohen, Josh Nelson, Rabbi Rick Sarason, and Cantor Alane Katzew! With the collective wealth of knowledge and breath of experience represented by the faculty, attendees can count on a varied, robust, and lively journey through the material at hand.
A typical day begins after breakfast with T'filah at 9am and continues as late as 9:30pm, with appropriate breaks for meals and to simply catch one's breath. Activities run the gamut and include:
- general lectures on liturgy, worship design
- small-group, elective-study workshops on more focused skills and techniques
- faculty and participant led t'filah
- repertoire review
- meet-the-composer reading sessions
Of course, these are just the scheduled activities. Informal, ad-hoc social events take place as time and interests permit. From late-night music sessions to jaunts to experience certain Cincinnati gastronomic highlights (ice cream and chili -- NOT at the same time!), there's always something fun going on.
Join us at Mifgash Musicale this July for a Jewish musical experience you will remember!
